I know. You’re probably thinking, “I can’t believe she’s reading Twilight.” Especially when I’m such a huge Harry Potter fan. However, it’s the truth. I am indeed reading Twilight. Re-reading, I should probably say. Yes, I’ve read Twilight before. In my defense, I started reading it before all the hype around it began. And then I had to know how it ended. I bet you’re waiting for the reason why I’m reading it again, aren’t you? Well….I’m kind of writing a research paper about it. Yes, you read that correctly. I’m in college and I’m writing a research paper about Twilight. Shocking, I know. I’m currently taking an Honors class called Vampires in Film and Literature, which in its self is weird. But it’s a very interesting class. We started with Dracula and have worked our way up to Buffy. But back to Twilight. I’m currently on the third book in the series, Eclipse. Exciting, I know. But re-reading the series points out the glaring flaws that made me not really like the series the first time.
The main reason I can’t stand Twilight is that I absolutely can’t stand Bella. She irritates me so much. All she does is complain the whole time how she isn’t good enough for Edward, blah, blah, blah. She irritates me the most in New Moon. Edward leaves and she literally can’t do anything. She’s basically catatonic for like 4 months. Who does that? No one I know. If she could have just accepted that he wasn’t coming back, then she would have been with Jacob and the series would have been ten times better. (Yeah, I’m team Jacob. He’s better in about a million different ways). By letting Edward go, she would have been so much more happy. Who doesn’t want to fall in love with their best friend? Okay, besides the fact that she complains all the time, the other reason that I can’t stand Bella is that she always waits for someone to save her. She never does anything for herself. How does that empower the woman? We’re supposed to be strong, men don’t always have to come to our rescue. But not Bella. She’s content to sit back and allow the strong men do the work. So annoying.
The second reason I can’t stand Twilight is the writing. The writing style just isn’t good. It’s bad. It’s one of those things that if you look too closely, you wouldn’t be able to believe what you were reading. That is why I don’t understand why people are so obsessed with the series. It’s just bad writing. Look at Harry Potter. That is some good writing. JK Rowling is a genius. Her plot is so detailed and complicated, it’s amazing that she came up with it all on her own. But Twilight‘s plot is so very simple. Girl falls in love with a vampire, and she gets what she wants in the end. End of story. Nothing really exciting really happens and the story really isn’t that hard to follow. I guess I can see the appeal in that, if you’re not really all that into reading. If you want something quick and easy, then Twilight is right for you. But if you’re looking for something more complicated, something that will make you think, don’t pick Twilight. You might regret it if you do.

Oh wow! A scathing review!
I do have to say that I'm a literature nerd AND I loved Twilight. I wouldn't begin to argue that it's better written than The Harry Potter Series (it's most definitely not), but I fully enjoyed it.
I have a different opinion of Bella's character, especially in the last book. In the end, she's stronger physically than Edward is, which is a statement in itself. Also, during the time that Bella is practically catatonic, Edward is in nearly the same state. I understand why many people are annoyed with it, but I don't see it as a gender issue. It honestly doesn't bother me, however, and I think it's a testament to the strength of her feelings (blablabla, mushy stuff, haha).
I'm not going to argue that it's great literature, and it's not for everyone. But I do like the series! And I'm not dumb, either. And I don't usually like things that are popular for no reason. But it's fun, at least for me, and I don't think it's all that bad. 🙂
(great blogpost though… I love it when people write with an opinion, SO much more interesting!)

Your arguments about Bella do make sense….however she just always gets on my nerves, probably because I was rooting for Jacob and she picked Edward (even though I knew that was inevitable). She also adds to it when she complains about having two guys in love with her. That's seriously not something to complain about.
I think Twilight might just rub me the wrong way because the majority of the fans that like it just read Twilight…they don't read anything else. Harry Potter is different because it got people to want to read more. I feel that most girls read Twilight because Edward is the "perfect boyfriend," which I completely disagree with because I see him as kind of a stalker….yet another reason why Jacob is better 🙂
And I won't judge you for liking Twilight 🙂 My best friend's sister is completely obsessed and while I wouldn't argue that she's completely sane, I still trust her judgment when it comes to books.
