What if you knew about Facebook before everyone else did? In the book The Future of Us by Jay Asher and Carolyn Mackler, Josh and Emma stumble upon Facebook in the year 1996. Emma just got a computer from her father, and when she downloads AOL for her computer, a website pops up. Facebook, 15 years later. Now imagine, you’re in high school and Facebook doesn’t yet exist. The internet isn’t nearly as popular as it is today. When you finally do get a computer with internet, Facebook pops up, showing you your future. What would you do? It’s really interesting to think about.
So Josh and Emma know each other because they’re next door neighbors and have been best friends for years. But something happened between them, and things have been kind of tense (you don’t figure out exactly what happened for a little while…). But when Emma finds Facebook, Josh is the first person she tells. And they soon figure out that every little thing they do changes their future. Emma is trying to change hers because her future looks absolutely miserable. Josh could care less because his future looks amazing. The Future of Us follows what happens to them as they try to figure out what this crazy thing called Facebook is.
As a whole, this book was really good. The storyline was good (if not a little predictable) and I loved the whole idea of it. There was one thing that I found a little annoying was the characters seemed a little young for the age they’re supposed to be. They are supposed to be upper high schoolers, but at times they seemed like middle schoolers. That was a little irritating, because I had to keep reminding myself how old they actually were. I don’t know if this was because of the time period it was written in or the way the authors write, but it irritated me. Just allow them to act their age! Thank you!
Well, I guess that’s all for now. Up next is Bumped by Megan McCafferty.
