Going in a slightly different vein today by creating a playlist for Hazel Grace from The Fault in Our Stars! It was a little more difficult than the others, but you know, fits the type of music I listen to because her story is a pretty sad one and my family always tells me that I listen to depressing music. This turned a little more into a playlist for The Fault in Our Stars instead, but it works for Hazel nonetheless!
“Cancer” cover by twenty one pilots
Too obvious? Maybe, but for a book about cancer, a song about cancer should probably be included.
“Numbers” by Daughter
I feel like Hazel often feels numb, as most of her life is spent just waiting for another episode that might be her last. But, she finds a way through that with books and with Gus.
“Samson” by Regina Spektor
This song fits Hazel’s feelings for Gus, and the story line of Samson in the song fits Gus’s story as well.
“Amsterdam” by Imagine Dragons
After reading An Imperial Affliction, all Hazel wants to do is go to Amsterdam. And thanks to Gus, she gets to go.
“Something I Need” by OneRepublic
Gus had something that Hazel needed in order to feel again, and the brief time of knowing him made her life all the better.
“Ophelia” by The Lumineers
Hazel knew better than to fall in love with Gus, but sometimes you just can’t help it.
“Blood Bank” by Bon Iver
This mirrors the beginning of Hazel’s relationship with Gus, and she tried to avoid the feelings she knew were growing because she didn’t want to hurt him.
“I Will Follow You Into the Dark” by Death Cab for Cutie
I imagine Hazel felt this after Gus’s funeral, not wanting to live life without him.
“Broad Shouldered Beasts” by Mumford & Sons
In the beginning, Hazel thought that Gus was going to have to be the one that was strong for her; however, Hazel ends up having to be strong for Gus, much like the speaker in the chorus of the song.
“Keep Breathing” by Ingrid Michaelson
Once Gus is gone, this becomes a daily reminder for Hazel.
Sorry for all the sad songs, but The Fault in Our Stars is a sad story! Do you have any songs that you’d add to Hazel’s list?
