Anyone who’s a Marvel fan knows that theĀ Captain Marvel trailer released today; and honestly, who didn’t watch it on repeat? It’s about time Marvel has released a female-lead movie (still waiting on that Black Widow movie, which actually finally has a director). But! We have to wait until March for the movie. So, to tide you over until then, fill your cooler days up with some fantastic comics.
1. Ms. Marvel
After Carol Danvers becomes Captain Marvel, Kamala Khan takes up her previous mantel of Ms. Marvel. And what isn’t to love about Kamala Khan? She’s also the first Muslim character to headline her own Marvel comic; while Marvel’s lacking a bit in representation in movies, they definitely aren’t lacking in their comics, and Kamala Khan proves that.
2. Spiderverse
Spiderverse is a story line in the most recent iteration of the Spider-Man comics where there’s a being hunting down all spider-powered beings–in every single universe. In order to stop them, Peter Parker (the one we know an love) gathers together an incredible spider army. Of course, this is after he was possessed by Doc Ock for a decent chunk of time (See: Superior Spider-Man). This is also getting its own movie, coming this December!
3. Saga
The only non Marvel comic on this list, but Saga will always be up there on any comics list for me. I almost can’t describe why I like this so much except the fact that it has some badass female characters, an awesome story line, and fantastic creatures (like the Lying Cat). Whenever someone asks me for a comic recommendation, this is definitely where I go first.
4. Captain Marvel: Earth’s Mightiest Hero
If you’re waiting for Captain Marvel, the most logical thing is to read Captain Marvel, right? I just picked these up a few months ago, and I’m really enjoying learning backstory for Carol Danvers. She’s such a genuine character that I can’t wait to see how they portray her on the big screen.
5. The Unbeatable Squirrel Girl
A somewhat more lighthearted comic than the rest on this list, Squirrel Girl (a.k.a. Doreen Green) is a girl with the strength and speed of a squirrel with her own squirrel sidekick. She’s a freshman in college, studying computer science, and battles evil on the side. We can only hope that maybe someday she’ll actually get her own show (movie?). Something.
