The beginning of the year always means finding new reading challenges for me. Last year, I found a few, but I didn’t end up really following them later on. *Shrugs* This year, things will change! I’ve devoted myself to two challenges: the Unread Shelf Project and Book Riot’s Read Harder Challenge.
The Unread Shelf Project
The Unread Shelf Project started on Instagram in hopes to read through all the unread books you have. Well, maybe not all of them. I have 65 unread books, for instance. Maybe I won’t read all of them, but balance between these and new books.
Essentially, there are challenges posted throughout the year to help reduce the amount of unread books that you have. And make your own goals! Do you want to cut your list in half? Reduce your ratio of unread to read? Read that book you’ve had for two years? All up to you.
For January the first challenge is to pick any book on your unread shelf. For me, this was The Last Romantics by Tara Conklin. This is an ARC I received awhile ago, and I’m finally getting around to reading and reviewing it (review to come next week!).
Read Harder Challenge
Each year, Book Riot hosts a “Read Harder” challenge in order to challenge you to read outside of your comfort zone. For the most part, a lot of the challenges are focused on reading more diversely. Which aligns with my own reading goals for the year! Huzzah!
There are a total of 24 posts, meaning two per month. For this month, the challenges are:
- An epistolary novel or collection of letters
- An alternate history novel
My choices to fit these are: When You Reach Me by Mary Adkins and Dread Nation by Justina Ireland. The best part? These are on my unread shelf too! Two for one! Yay!
Get Reading!
Challenges are fun, but not necessary to encourage a good reading year! Whether you have goals or are just trying to have fun, make 2019 a great reading year!

I haven’t committed to any reading challenges but have arranged a few buddy reads which keep me on track.

Yay! Buddy reads are great. I’ve got a few lined up for the year as well. 🙂
