Over the past few years, I’ve really gotten into reading comics and graphic novels. But let’s face it, they are expensive. The majority of graphic novels are considerably shorter than your average novel, but since there’s so much ink, fancy paper, etc., they cost so much more. Enter: electronic comics.
There are plenty of places online where you can read a variety of your favorite comics and graphic novels, and some of them are even free! I enjoy having a lot of these apps on my phone because it means that I always have something to read wherever I am. Which is great for all those periods that you spend waiting: in line at the coffee shop, at the doctor’s office, on your lunch break, etc.
You don’t have to break the bank to continue your favorite comic storylines. If you’re watching your spending in 2019, downloading these apps will help to limit the amount you spend on books and comics while not limiting the amount that you can read.
Hoopla
Hoopla is an app that allows you to borrow various materials through your local library. All you need to sign up is active library card, and then the world is open to you! I’ve been using this to read the latest volumes of Saga, which might warrant a re-read in the coming year. Because they’re on hiatus and that ending just broke my heard.
Overdrive
Overdrive is another app that you can download through your library, though it is generally more useful for ebooks and audiobooks. But this doesn’t mean that you can’t find the odd graphic novel now and again. And once again–it’s free!
Comixology
While the previous two apps are free, this one will cost you a little. Comixology has now partnered with Amazon, meaning that you can download comics via your Amazon account. For $5.99, you can unlock the unlimited feature which allows you to download any of the comics in their unlimited collection. If there’s a comic that isn’t in their collection, the ebook version is heavily discounted, guaranteed to save you money!
Marvel Comics
Marvel also has an app (as I’m sure does DC) where you can purchase their comics electronically. Probably the more expensive of the apps included here, but it still includes a discount outside of purchasing physical copies of them. And they’ll always be on your phone!

I’m so jelly of America and it’s Hoopla! It seems amazing. I have kindle unlimited and can read some awesome comics through it!

I seriously love it so much! Definitely something that libraries should be able to use globally. I feel like Amazon/kindle has really upped their comics game lately. 🙂
