With the recent release (and success) of Captain Marvel, today we’re going to celebrate female heroes! Though the Marvel Cinematic University (MCU) has lacked in female leads, this doesn’t mean that they don’t exist. In fact, they exist in a fairly large number. And if you’re looking for something read after seeing the movie, definitely check these out (and my other list here)!
Overall, the MCU has had a gender problem in the past. For example, they left Black Widow out of a number of Avengers toys/products. Their promotions are quite often geared toward men. While you could argue that that’s because of the source material, that’s not necessarily the case. Early on, you could probably make a case for this. But the fact is, there are plenty of positive role models in Marvel comics, if you know where to look.
Female Heroes
Ms. Marvel
I’m actually a bit behind on these comics, but the newest re-vamp of this character features Kamala Khan, the first Muslim-American to be featured in the comics. I have absolutely loved all the volumes I’ve read, though!
Hawkeye: Kate Bishop
In Matt Fraction’s version of Hawkeye, there’s a story line where Kate Bishop is also Hawkeye, and they work together at times. Now she has her own series!
World of Wakanda
A Black Panther story, this version features Ayo and Aneka, two ladies dedicated to protecting the crown of Wakanda. Plus, Roxane Gay wrote it and she’s fabulous in everything she does.
The Unbeatable Squirrel Girl
Doreen has the powers of a squirrel, tail and all. There’s definitely a sense of humor in these comics that is sometimes lacking in other Marvel comics. Doreen can also hold her own against some pretty formidable villains, and even some heroes.
America
Previous Young Avenger and leader of the Ultimates, America Chavez now gets her own, full-fledged comic series. Written by known YA novelist Gabby Rivera, America’s voice shines through.
Ironheart (Riri Williams)
Riri Williams takes over as Iron Man in the latest Iron Man story line, a great direction for a well-known and established character. Plus, she’s characterized as smarter than Tony Stark and isn’t afraid to put him in his place.
