If you think about it, there are hundreds of factors that probably go your choice to pick up a book. Not only are you influenced by outside factors, but also weather, emotions, etc. Since I work in a bookstore, these factors play a major role in what end up taking home from work. Which is typically more than I should, but sometimes not as much as you’d think!
Top Ten Tuesday is a meme that was created by The Broke and the Bookish and is currently run by The Artsy Reader Girl. The topics always create fun conversation, like the audiobook one from last week! I haven’t thought about my reasons for picking up a book recently, so this one was fun too!
Top Ten Reasons to Pick Up a Book
- Bookstagram Recommendations: Lately, recommendations from the Instagram community heavily influence the books I pick up to buy and read. I’ve read three different series came from there, and I don’t expect it to change!
- Personal Recommendations: I should note: these aren’t included in any particular order. Personal recommendations are near and dear to my heart.
- Cover Art: If I know nothing about a book, this is the first thing that will make me pick it up. I know you’re not supposed to judge a book by its cover, but pretty covers are just more eye-catching.
- Author Recommendations: Authors often recommend books online in various places, and if a favorite author of mine recommends something, I’ll definitely check it out!
- Subject Matter: I don’t necessarily stick to just one kind of book. I’ll read pretty much anything. However, what the book is about will make it more appealing. For example, I don’t necessarily like science-heavy science fiction, so I tend to stay away from those.
- Representation: Lately, I’m trying to pay more attention to this. I want to read books that represent everyone–not just a select group of people.
- Adaptation: I used to be a person who 100% would try not to see a movie without reading the book first. This is now pretty much impossible, with the rate that adaptations are going. So, if I watch something that I really enjoyed, I’ll be more likely to pick up the book (like Game of Thrones!).
- Emotional State: Though not always, I can be a mood reader. Typically, this correlates with stress. Stress equals happy books.
- Seasons: Not always a mood read, but definitely a seasonal reader. Is that even a thing? If not, I’ll make it a thing. But generally, I liked to read things that match the weather outside.
- Hype: Though I don’t want to admit it, hype grabs my interest. After all, I need to know why so many people loved the book. And maybe I’ll love it too!
