Since the movie has been out for a month now, I figured it’s finally time for my Avengers Endgame review! I’ve been holding off because I didn’t really want to spoil it for anyone. But a month is plenty of time to see it! Especially since the Spider-Man: Far From Home trailer has also been released. And they lifted the spoiler ban online. So, I’m definitely in the clear.
Also, can we talk about how excited I am for Spider-Man? Because Tom Holland is my favorite and the movie looks like it’s going to be amazing. I’m still reading the comics off and on, when I get the chance. There’s so much to catch up on! And they’re still being published. If you’re looking for books to read after seeing Endgame, check out some of my Marvel book recs!
Anyway, without further ado, my mostly coherent thoughts on Avengers Endgame! Spoilers below, so proceed at your own risk.
Avengers Endgame Review
Positives
All right guys, I’m going to start out with the positives. I don’t really review movies that often, so I’m going to do my best. Essentially, I think this was the perfect finale for the past 10 years of Marvel movies, giving nods to our favorite characters and putting in moments that all the fans wanted. Were there too many fan-based moments? Maybe. But I don’t think that takes away from the overall quality of the movie. It was entertaining and really gave viewers a full range of emotions.
The time-travel aspect of the movie also let fans revisit some of their favorite moments from previous Marvel movies, giving us a trip down memory lane. It wasn’t necessarily outstanding in the plot or broke the general mold of a Marvel movie, but it honestly was what I felt like I wanted in an ending. We get closure on the original characters and get openings for future characters to come.
Outside of the ending, when all the dusted characters come back, the most epic moment for me was when Captain America gets Thor’s hammer. Honestly, I didn’t see that one coming and it just felt right for the moment. Also, all the scenes with Spider-Man were great. You can see the set-up for how this is going to effect Peter Parker in later movies, and I really can’t wait to see Tom Holland portray this new side of Spider-Man we have yet to see.
Negatives
As with every movie, there are things that I wish they did differently. One of the my biggest complaints with the movie was the way that they treated Black Widow’s death versus Iron Man’s. Okay, I get that Iron Man was kind of the beginning of the MCU, and he’s basically the head of the movies, etc. So, he obviously needed an epic send off. But that doesn’t mean that you couldn’t include one for Black Widow too! She was just as important to the success of the mission, and since the Avengers were her family, she deserved some sort of memorial as well. In a three hour movie, they could have spared 5 minutes to give her the funeral that she deserved.
My other major complaint with the movie was the lack of Captain Marvel. Honestly, all the promotional material implied that she’d be a huge part of the movie and she wasn’t. I get that this was more of a goodbye to the original Avengers, but I wanted more Carol Danvers! I guess I should just be happy that she’s a part of the next Marvel phase, because she’s one of my favorites.
All in all, Avengers Endgame was the finale that we needed for some of our favorite Marvel characters. The future might be a bit murky without our favorites, but I don’t doubt that Marvel will make it successful.
