It feels like it’s been awhile since I’ve done a Top Ten Tuesday post, so this week is movie adaptations! Adaptations can be hit or miss when it comes to your favorite books. Honestly, there are so many things the movie makers can get wrong. When it’s your favorite book, any small change can be so sad. In reality, there’s no way all the small details can make it into the movie. The movie would be so long! You probably don’t care, but the movie probably wouldn’t do all that well in theaters.
Lately, a lot of YA books have been made into movies (or are going to be made into movies). Yay! I’m always excited to see these books in theaters, and if they’re successful, more will be made! I’m down for that. In the next year, I’m most excited for Chaos Walking; it’s going to have Tom Holland in it!
Top Ten Tuesday is a meme that was created by The Broke and the Bookish and is currently run by The Artsy Reader Girl. If you haven’t checked out their posts yet, you definitely should! I’ve been doing them since January and have enjoyed each one. You can check out my last one here!
Favorite Movie Adaptations
1. Perks of Being a Wallflower
This will forever be one of my favorite adaptations, I think. Sure, they left some of the plot lines out from the books, but the feel of the movie reflected the book. I could watch it over and over again and still be just as happy with it as I am with the book.
2. Love, Simon
The movie makers took a lot of liberties with the plot in this movie as well (even leaving out some of the characters), but it still felt like the book did. And the movie was just perfect in the way they presented the story: funny with a lot of emotion.
3. Spider-Man: Homecoming
Okay, you may be thinking that this doesn’t quite count as an adaptation. 😂 But it totally does! It’s the MCU’s version based on the comics, and in my opinion, this one comes the closest to feeling like the comics. At least, in a live-action format.
4. Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse
Is it cheating if I put two Spider-Man movies on the list? Nahhh. This one actually feels like you’re watching a comic come to life on the screen, and though I haven’t read any Miles Morales comics, I’m sure they did his character justice.
5. The Fault In Our Stars
I would say that this was an early contender in the trend to make YA books into movies, and they did a pretty good job with this movie. It felt true to the book, and it didn’t really leave much out in terms of the plot. It may be a sob fest, but what do you expect from John Green?
6. The Hunger Games: Catching Fire
This one was a debate because honestly, I loved the Mockingjay movies. I actually liked Mockingjay overall as a book. But! I think Catching Fire is the most effective movie, showing both the Capitol and starting to show the dissent that’s happening. It worked much better than the first movie, at any rate.
7. A Monster Calls
If you’re looking for a tear-jerker, look no further than this movie. Or book. The movie honestly follows the book almost point for point, and it was absolutely gorgeous. It didn’t get a very wide release, but it definitely should have. The real question is, why don’t I own this movie yet?
8. The Book Thief
This is one of my favorite books, as Markus Zusak writes beautiful prose. The movie fits the story that Zusak wrote, bringing to life this tragic story that’s set during WWII. It has to be difficult to bring to life a story like this, and the movie did the book justice.
9. Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince
I guess it can’t be a movie adaptations list without at least one Harry Potter movie, right? It’s always difficult for me to pick a favorite movie because my favorite book to movie was a let down. Order of the Phoenix didn’t do the book justice. But this movie inserted humor and the movie, for the most part, fit the book.
10. Divergent
Though the series overall was disappointing, this first movie was actually really well done. It was a series that, to me, had such potential. But as we got further down, the books were just disappointing. So, we’ll just pretend that this is the only movie, right?

I’ve been wanting to rewatch the Hunger Games movies lately, so I just might soon! And I remember loving Catching Fire the first time I saw it ♥

Yeah! It’s been awhile since I’ve watched the movies too, but they definitely deserve a re-watch! 😊
