As I said yesterday, I’m going to be focusing on Pride Month posts throughout June! Which means today’s focus is LGBTQ reads. Since I’m doing a series on the weekends, this post will focus on 2019 LGBTQ releases. There are a lot of great books coming out this year, and so definitely add them to your TBR!
Throughout, I’ll do my best to focus on books that are coming out later this year, but there are some great books coming out this summer too. Also, I’ll include a variety of identities so that no one feels left out! Like my previous Read to Resist posts, I’ll just be focusing on 5 books, but check out this link to find others coming out this year.
Pride Month Releases
Wayward Son by Rainbow Rowell
I know it’s not own voices, but I’m so so excited for this book to come out in September! Carry On is one of my absolute favorite books, and I’ve been eagerly awaiting this sequel every since I heard it was announced. And hearing Rainbow Rowell talk about it at Book Con made me even more excited!
Release date: September 24th
Wilder Girls by Rory Power
This is being marketed as a queer, female retelling of Lord of the Flies, and I’m actually so excited for it. It’s going to be a BN YA Book Club pick for August, and this might be the one I’m looking forward to the most. If you’re in my area, you should come to the book club! I’m most likely leading them each month.
Release date: July 9th
Orpheus Girl by Brynne Rebele-Henry
I just got approved for this book on Net Galley, and I can’t wait to read it. The cover looks gorgeous as well. It’s about two girls that get sent to a re-education camp, desperate to get out. Marketed as Sylvia Plath meets David Levithan, this is definitely for me.
Release date: October 8th
Shatter the Sky by Rebecca Kim Wells
LGBTQ characters are finally making their way into other genres, albeit slowly. This is a book that I’ve seen all over Twitter, and it’s got magic and fighting and everything you could want in a YA fantasy. At least, that’s what it seems like from the description.
Release date: July 30th
The Merciful Crow by Margaret Owen
The fact that this was an LGBTQ book, or at least that it had LGBTQ characters, pleasantly surprised me when reading it. Plus, it’s a unique fantasy that you’ll definitely want to get your hands on when it comes out in July.
