Title: Luminessence
Author: Hayley Gabrielle
Publisher: Bowker
Publication Date: May 20, 2019
Summary
This second book in the Essence Chronicles picks up where the first book, Essence, leaves off. Abbey has chosen to remain in the alternate dimension Ethra in her new role as the Melder. She’s the one that’s supposed to create the balance between all human desires through a ceremony called the Breathing.
As Abbey accompanies Zac back to his home and his family, she starts to uncover things about the past that will impact her decisions in the future. Told in alternating chapters between past and present, the past might determine Abbey’s future. And just maybe, it will get her closer to the Truth that the Essences so desperately want her to find.
Review: Luminessence
I reviewed the first book in this series, Essence, last year, so the author reached out with the second book to review. Obviously, I immediately said yes! Gabrielle created such an interesting and unique world in Ethra that I couldn’t wait to see where Abbey went next on her adventures.
So, I’ll admit that I had to refresh my memory for Essence before jumping back into the series. I read a lot of books! What I actually loved the most about this second book in the series is that we get more background and history on Ethra. This was something that I wanted more of in the first book. I’m so glad we got more of this in this one! It felt like it allowed me to better understand where the characters were coming from and where they’re planning on going next.
And that ending! I’m so glad there’s going to be a book three because I need to know what happens next. The budding relationship between Abbey and Zac added an element that I felt like I was missing in the first book. I’m looking forward to seeing more from everyone (and new characters) in the next book!
