It’s officially the end of August, which means it’s time for another Wrap-Up post! Hard to believe the summer is basically over and fall is here. Well, relatively speaking. We have all our fall stuff up at work, and fall drinks have been released at Starbucks. And bonus, it’s been a bit cooler! All absolutely fantastic things that signal the coming of my favorite season.
For the most part, I achieved my reading goals for the month. However, I didn’t have nearly as good of a reading month as July. Despite my all my classes, I got so much reading done in July! Not so much in August. Oh well. I think I might still be able to make it to 200 books before the end of the year, though!
My total count for books read in July is 14–not a bad sum! Also, considering I wrote a good amount of reviews for July and ARC August. But more on that in a moment!
Reading Challenges
I finished all the entries for the Unread Shelf and Read Harder. Yay!
For the Unread Shelf Project, the challenge this month was a book voted on by Instagram. I read:
- Dear Haiti, Love Alaine by Maika and Maritza Moulite
It was an ARC that we got at work, and I absolutely flew threw the book! I loved it.
Stayed caught up on Book Riot’s Read Harder Challenge, too! I have absolutely loved reading outside of my comfort zone for these.
- A book of mythology or folklore: Red Rising by Pierce Brown
- A historical romance by an author of color: An Extraordinary Union by Alyssa Cole
Next month is a business book and a book by a nonbinary or transgender author! Both excellent choices.
For ARC August, I read 6 ARCs. Not quite as many as I originally wanted to get to (it feels like I still have a lot), but a decent amount nonetheless!
Other August Favorites
One of the highlights of August for me was getting to meet Rainbow Rowell at her event in Chicago! I’ve missed her twice this year when I had the chance to meet her, and I’m glad I was finally able to. She’s so funny and nice, and it was lovely to hear her talk about writing and her new book.
I didn’t really see many movies this month, though a notable one was What We Do in the Shadows, recommended by a co-worker! Hilarious and out of the box, it’s a mockumentary about a group of vampires living in New Zealand. And it was seriously perfect.
TV show wise, I finally finished Jessica Jones season 3, and though it didn’t stand up to the first season (which is the best), it was a pretty solid season. Lots of discussion about good versus bad and what it means to be a vigilante. Do they have the right to also act outside of the law? Out of all the Marvel Netflix characters, I think Jessica Jones is my favorite.
