Spider-Man: Far From Home has been out for a month now, so I think I’m safe posting a review! Though, there were definitely a lot more spoilers floating around the internet for this movie than Endgame. I guess people didn’t care as much? Maybe it wasn’t as hyped, but there was still plenty to spoil in the movie overall. Perhaps not if you’re an avid Spider-Man fan, but those end credits, man! So many spoilers.
Anyway, if you’ve seen my Instagram, you know how much I love Spider-Man. Not only am I trying to read all the backlist stuff from the past (man, there’s a lot), but I also collect Spider-Man Funko Pops. He’s my favorite, and still wish he was in Infinity War and Endgame more. But mostly because I need more Tom Holland. 😂 He’s the best Spider-Man, and no amount of arguing can convince me otherwise.
Spider-Man: Far From Home
Far From Home picks up after the events of Endgame, calling the five year time jump “The Blip.” All Peter Parker wants is to go on a vacation with his friends and forget about superhero stuff, but Nick Fury has other intentions. Especially when the Elementals start knocking. Boom! Chaos ensues, and Peter is forced to make a choice: superhero life or no?
What I loved about this movie–everything? I loved that this was basically a reversal from Homecoming; in that movie, all Peter wanted was to be a part of the Avengers. Now, all he wants is a normal life. He doesn’t want the burden of saving the world, all the time. After all, he’s only 16. He wants time to enjoy his life with his friends, just be a kid. But there’s a burden on him that isn’t on other teenagers, and he has to figure out if this is a life that he wants.
The way Mysterio was included in the movie was also a huge success. If you don’t know what’s coming, then the twist is shocking. Mysterio also succeeds in turning the narrative on its head, especially in that end credit scene (with a familiar face coming back). What’s real and what isn’t? And how is Peter going to cope with his big reveal? I know we won’t get another Spider-Man movie for a while (le sigh), but I need to know!
Tom Holland is also one of the reasons why I think these movies have been so successful where the Andrew Garfield reboot wasn’t. Holland finds the right balance between Peter’s nerdy and awkwardness and Spider-Man’s sarcasm. Ah! I love it, so much. He can keep playing Spider-Man forever, if it was up to me.
And Peter and MJ! All their awkward teenage romance. It’s the perfect balance for the worldly conflicts Peter is struggling with and I can’t wait to see where they go with it in the next movie. This series seems to be gearing more toward the comics, and I’m one hundred percent here for that.
