Review: Devourers from Suryaksh
I reviewed the first book in this series, Demons of Time, this past spring; Varun Sayal was kind enough to send me the second book to review as well! In this book, we get even more of the intricate world that Sayal has created. New magic, new villains, and lots of time travel.
One of the best things about Sayal’s writing is his ability to create near perfect pacing. Not every action book has to have action every single second, and Sayal balances out the action in the book with plenty of down time. This means that the reader doesn’t feel out of breath and is able to catch up with Tej, what he’s doing and how he’s feeling. It also gives depth to the characters, which is always key for me to connect to a book.
My only complaint comes in the form of there possibly being too many plots going on at once. It is a time travel story, so expect that there are quite a few people to keep track of. As long as you pay close attention, you’ll be able to follow Tej and everything going on around him. Once you get the world down, everything else comes pretty easily.
