With the Oscars 2020 just around the corner, I figured it was time for an Oscars post! I did one last year, book themed of course. It seems like a good annual thing to do, especially since a lot of the young adult adaptations don’t necessarily get acknowledged in movie awards. But that doesn’t make them any less good! There have been a lot of fantastic movies stemming from the YA realm in the last few years, too.
Anyway, I’m going to stick to the categories I did last year. I’m going to have to refresh my mind for some of them, but I’m sure there’s plenty to fit! These are the categories I have:
- Best Actor
- Best Actress
- Most Creative Author Cameo
- Best Soundtrack
- Closest Adaptation
- Best Overall Film
- Haven’t Read It Yet
- Honorable Mentions
The honorable mentions is for movies that I wished I had seen, but never got to. Which was a theme of the last year, but that’s okay! I still read a lot of books.
Oscars 2020: Young Adult Edition
Best Actor: Tom Holland
No one is probably surprised at this, but Tom Holland does Spider-Man so well that he deserves a mention here. Far From Home was one of my favorite movies from last year, between the writing, the acting, and just everything about it. But thank god we’re getting another one, with that cliffhanger!
Best Actress: Kristine Froseth
She played Alaska in Hulu’s Looking for Alaska adaptation, and she did a phenomenal job. Actually, pretty much everyone did a phenomenal job in that, but her performance especially stuck out.
Most Creative Author Cameo: Stan Lee
2019 marked the last time that we’ll likely see a Stan Lee cameo in a movie, so it makes sense to include him here! Avengers: Endgame is the last cameo he filmed, which is fitting since it was the end of the infinity saga. But it’s still sad we won’t get to see them again!
Best Soundtrack: Looking for Alaska
The music in this fit the show and the book almost perfectly. It added to the atmosphere Green created and added to everything that happened in the book.
Closest Adaptation: The Sun is Also a Star
It’s been awhile since I read this book, but the only difference was that the ending was changed slightly. Despite that, it was a great adaptation that stayed faithful to Yoon’s original story.
Best Overall Film (or TV show): Looking for Alaska
I watched the whole season of this in basically one day and I loved it. We’ve been waiting for so long for an adaptation of this book and this one did not disappoint.
Haven’t Read It Yet: Little Women
This got a lot of Oscar buzz (except for director, because they notoriously leave women out of that category), but I never read the book. Or saw the movie, actually. But I heard it was really good! It’ll be something that I watch eventually.
Honorable Mentions
The Umbrella Academy
I watched this and read the first volume of the comics, and I have to say, I enjoyed the adaptation better. The two are quite different and I felt that the story line in the show was easier to follow. I think we’re getting a second season sometime soon and I can’t wait!
Game of Thrones
With the end of this show in 2019, it at least deserves a mention. A lot of people weren’t happy with the ending, but my main complaint was that it was too rushed. Since it was the last season, it definitely deserved more episodes than it got.
The Miseducation of Cameron Post
This is a book I read back when it first came out, and the movie is supposed to be phenomenal. I keep seeing it at the library and meaning to check it out, but it all comes down to time again.
