While it’s a bummer that libraries are closed, that doesn’t mean that you can’t access some of your favorite e-resources! A lot of them are even providing accessible WiFi, if you’re able to get close to the building. However, that means is you can still access audiobooks through apps like Overdrive, Hoopla, and Libby! My preferred app is Libby, which is what I’m using to listen to all of Cassandra Clare’s books. But, you can access some of my favorite audiobooks through there as well!
As your resident librarian-in-training and self-proclaimed e-resource expert, ask me questions! I’m always happy to help. If you haven’t gotten into audiobooks before, now might be the time to start. They’re great to listen to if you’re doing chores around the house, or are perfect for a walk outside! If you’re looking for a place to get started, here are five of my absolute favorites.
Top 5 Favorite Audiobooks
1. Illuminae by Amie Kaufman and Jay Kristoff
This will be one of my all-time favorite audiobooks, I think! While the print version is just as amazing, the audiobook really pulls you into this sci-fi world that Kaufman and Kristoff have created. Also, there’s a full cast and sound effects! Turn it on, close your eyes, and get lost in epic space battles.
2. Born a Crime by Trevor Noah
Narrated by Trevor Noah himself, this is a must listen! Mostly because Noah adds snippets of different languages throughout and you get to hear them first hand. Plus, Noah’s delivery is amazing. From what I’ve seen of him in videos online, he’s a great comedian. His narration of his essays about growing up really illustrates the affects of apartheid in South Africa.
3. Long Way Down by Jason Reynolds
Honestly, there is no other way to consume this novel in verse. After all, Jason Reynolds reads this book himself. And his voice is amazing. Through his narration, you get to hear the verse as he intended it. By the end, you’ll want Reynolds to narrate every audiobook for you. A perfect afternoon listen.
4. An Ember in the Ashes by Sabaa Tahir
In my last year and a half of listening to audiobooks, Steve West has become one of my favorites. Usually, if I see he’s narrating a YA book, I’ll add it to my TBR. He narrates half this book, and it’s definitely worth it! His voice is so smooth and beautiful, you won’t want it to stop.
5. Gideon the Ninth by Tamsyn Muir
I read this for book club and I’m glad I listened to it! I’m currently reading Harrow the Ninth for review and wish I could also review the audiobook. Not only does the narration help you figure out how to pronounce all the crazy names, but it also fits Gideon almost perfectly! Another excellent space drama to add to your TBR.

I loved the audio for the Illuminae books and for A Long Way Down. I love when authors read their own books.
