While the world outside is chaos, maybe you’re looking for something happy and fluffy to read right now. I know that’s been me for the past week or so–it seems that YA Romances are at the top of that list. Now, I know they’re not for everyone. And there are some cringe-worthy ones out there. But don’t worry–there are some great ones, too!
For me, a great YA romance hits the sweet spot between characters and plot. While the plot might follow a predictable formula, it still needs substance! Outside of the romance, what are the characters doing? That makes or breaks the book, in my opinion. Each of the romances here include quirky characters, fun settings, and romances to make you swoon.

Serious Moonlight by Jenn Bennett
Jenn Bennett was supposed to have a new book coming out next month (Chasing Lucky), but the release date got pushed back until November. But! She still has a lot of great books out that you can devour before then. Serious Moonlight is set on the West Coast and it’s all about mysteries. And an old hotel. I’ll pull you right in!

Bloom by Kevin Panetta, illustraed by Savanna Ganucheau
This graphic novel is one you could probably read in an afternoon, but that doesn’t mean it’s any less swoon-worthy. Bloom follows the story of Ari and Hector, who essentially fall in love baking for the summer. Can you get any cuter than that? Plus, the art is on point.

Fangirl by Rainbow Rowell
Now, this one isn’t specifically shelved in the romance section at Barnes and Noble, but I’m including it because Levi is the best book boyfriend. Seriously, he’s a barista and brings Cath coffee all the time. What’s not to like? Writing about it just makes me want to read this book again.

You Know Me Well by Nina LaCour and David Levithan
LaCour and Levithan are both well-established YA authors, and they teamed up to give us this quick read. Told in alternating perspectives between Mark and Kate, we get to experience both of their first loves. Reminiscent of books like Nick and Norah’s Infinite Playlist, this book will keep you thinking those happy thoughts.

Leah on the Offbeat by Becky Albertalli
Not only does this book have a cute romance a la Simon Vs. the Homo Sapiens Agenda, it’s also hilarious! There are so many moments in this book where I laughed out loud. Leah’s trying to find a way to tell her friends that she’s bisexual–but the moment never seems right. If you need some laughs, this is a great romantic comedy!

To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before by Jenny Han
Admittedly, this is not my favorite series of all time, but this first book is all about the romantic comedy tropes. When Lara Jean’s letters to old crushes all get sent out, chaos ensues. But maybe, just maybe, it will lead to her landing her first real boyfriend. Bonus: when you’re done, you can watch the Netflix adaptation!

Frankly in Love by David Yoon
Pretty sure I’ve talked about this book on here before, but it deserves to be talked about everywhere! Frank Li is a Korean American whose parents only want him to date fellow Koreans, like Joy Song. However, the two want to date other people. So, they set up a scheme to fool their parents–but just maybe, there’s actually a spark there. A beautiful look at teenage love, first relationships, and family expectations.

Emergency Contact by Mary H.K. Choi
Penny is on her way to her first year of college, desperate to make a new start. Sam is stuck working at a cafe, unsure of how to move forward in his life. When the two collide in their first meeting, they exchange numbers and quickly form an online bond. But will it make it in real life? Relevant and timely and filled with some excellent baked goods, this is everything you need in good YA romances.
