Friends, it’s already July! Honestly, I feel like the last month went by really quickly. As I’ve gotten busy again, time is just flying by. This week was a pretty decent reading week for me, since I listened to audiobooks when I was at the library. Putting together packets makes for great audiobook reading time! For the week of 6/27, I finished 8 books! Half were graphic novels and a few were audiobooks, but I felt like I accomplished a lot.
Next week might be a bit slower on the reading front since I have to work for the next 8 days. But for now, I’m enjoying my day off and probably will read for the rest of the afternoon.
Check out previous week’s reviews for 2020:
3/21, 3/28, 4/4, 4/11, 4/18, 4/25, 5/2, 5/9, 5/16, 5/23, 5/30, 6/6, 6/13, 6/20
Bite Size Reviews: Week of 6/27
Saga, Vol. 7 by Brian K. Vaughan (6/27)
I finished my re-read of this last week! This volume finds new relationships for Alanna and Marko’s family as they’re stuck on a planet re-fueling. Honestly, this was one of the sadder volumes, at least by the end. There are also some gut wrenching moments here, but there’s also an element of home. One of the best things about this series, really (5 stars).
Trans Like Me by CN Lester (6/29)
This is a memoir by activist and musician C.N. Lester about the transgender community and the relationship to popular culture. It examines the gender binary and the way that Lester’s own experiences. For those wanting to learn more about the transgender community and issues they face, this is an excellent introduction (5 stars).
Love, Creekwood by Becky Albertalli (6/29)
Another installment in the Simonverse! This is a little novella that came out following the crew we know and love in their first year of college. Told in a series of emails back and forth between Bram, Simon, Leah, and Abby, we get to see what they get up to in their college adventures. After watching Love, Victor, this was just the short and sweet book I needed (5 stars).
Saga, Vol. 8 by Brian K. Vaughan (6/29)
After the traumatic ending to the previous volume, the characters are now dealing with the consequences. Vaughan really puts them through the ringer, and as a reader, you just want them to be able to settle down and live out the rest of their live in peace. Maybe we’ll get there eventually? Either way, there’s just something about these volumes that you can’t put down (5 stars).
We Unleash the Merciless Storm by Tehlor Kay Mejia (6/30)
In the sequel to We Set the Dark on Fire, we get Carmen’s point of view instead of Dani’s as she goes back to the rebellion. They plan to take their last stand against the corrupt government in Medio. As the final book in this duology, the plot is fast paced and really pulls you along. Plus, the cast of characters are amazing. Mejia includes a lot of twists and turns that I wasn’t expecting, keeping me on my toes throughout. I definitely understand the hype! (4 stars).
Saga, Vol. 9 by Brian K. Vaughan (6/30)
This is the final volume before Vaughan and Staples went on hiatus, and let me tell you, it’s a doozy. I can’t believe that this is where they decided to end it as they went on a break! They really need to make some new volumes soon. I need more of this family in my life (5 stars).
Beneath the Citadel by Destiny Soria (7/3)
I don’t want to admit that I’ve had this ARC for two years and I just got to it now. But I’m so glad I finally read it! Cassa, Evander, Alys, and Newt are about to be executed for rebelling against the council who runs their country based on prophecies. As they work against the corrupt council, they learn secrets that could change the citadel forever. A standalone fantasy, something that’s unique in YA, and I couldn’t put it down there at the end. Plus, the core cast of characters is diverse and it features an asexual character! All the bonus points (4 stars).
The Bane Chronicles by Cassandra Clare (7/3)
A series of short stories about Magnus Bane, who is one of my favorite characters from the Shadowhunter world. While not all the stories were my favorite, I did love the later stories that feature Magnus and Alec. They are probably my favorite couple from the world and I love reading about them. They are just so adorable! (3 stars).
