Happy weekend, friends! I just have one more day of work standing between me and a week off. Honestly, it’s so needed. Work has been kind of crazy lately, and I just need a break from it. Plus, it’ll give me some much needed reading time! For the week of 7/4, I didn’t get much reading done. I only finished three books. That’s a pretty low number for me. My classes are starting to wind down, so that’ll mean more time for reading, too.
Check out previous week’s reviews for 2020:
3/21, 3/28, 4/4, 4/11, 4/18, 4/25, 5/2, 5/9, 5/16, 5/23, 5/30, 6/6, 6/13, 6/20, 6/27
Bite Size Reviews: Week of 7/4
Witchlight by Jessi Zabarsky (7/4)
This graphic novel follows Lelek the witch and Sanja who meet one day when Lelek rushes through town. And kidnaps Sanja. But as the two travel together, they realize that they have more in common than they thought. They travel, looking for Lelek’s missing half. The art was gorgeous in this, but there were some parts that were difficult to follow. Just small aspects of the story where I wanted more background or more clarity. Overall, it’s a lovely story (3 stars).
Juniper by Monica Furlong (7/7)
Our latest book club pick, this is a classic children’s fantasy book. Juniper is the daughter of a king–and possess magical abilities. So, she’s sent to her godmother, a doran, to learn the magical ways. While she’s gone for training, her aunt is poised to take power in the kingdom, putting her best friend in danger. Only Juniper can save them. What a magical, lovely read. It’s short, so it was quick, but it was so atmospheric. It reminded me of a Tamora Pierce book, honestly. I hadn’t read it before. It’s so lovely! (4 stars).
A Beautifully Foolish Endeavor by Hank Green (7/10)
After the sudden disappearance of the Carls, the world doesn’t really know what to do. April’s friends are trying to figure it out, too. When they start getting books with mysterious instructions, which suggest that things aren’t really what they seem. I’m trying hard not to give spoilers for the first book, but it’s difficult! There are a lot of spoilers in the summary. This was absolutely a wild ride, though! Green incorporates a lot of plot twists that keep you guessing, and a lot of the messages are relevant to current real world issues. I need friends to finish it so I can discuss! (4 stars).
