Happy Wednesday, bookish friends! In honor of Bisexuality Day, the Top 5 Wednesday prompt for today is bisexual characters. I’ve done some recommendations on this in the past, so I’ll aim for different ones this time! Bisexual characters are becoming more prominent in YA books, which is fantastic. I hope this trend continues into the future!
Top 5 Wednesday is a meme with weekly topics posted in this Goodreads group. Gabriela (Violent Hawthorne) has created the topics for the last two months!
Top 5 Bisexual Characters
1. Nathan from I Wish You All the Best by Mason Deaver
Nathan is Ben’s love interest in this book, someone who Ben is afraid to come out to as nonbinary at first. But they can’t deny their feelings for Nathan, and Nathan ends up being bisexual. Honestly, their relationship is fantastic and both Nathan and Ben can be themselves with each other.
2. Alice from Let’s Talk About Love by Claire Kann
Alice’s summer plans are ruined when her girlfriend breaks up with her. But things might be looking up when she meets Takumi. Maybe the summer can be turned around after all. There’s bonus asexual representation in this book, too, so all the more reason to pick it up!
3. Frances from Radio Silence by Alice Oseman
On the surface, you might think this is a book where Frances falls in love with her new best friend, Aled. But it’s not! Surprise! This is a book about what to do when you don’t want to fall in the typical path. Frances cares for Aled and will do anything to help him.
4. Nick from Heartstopper by Alice Oseman
At the beginning of Heartsopper, Charlie falls in love with Nick and doesn’t think anything can happen between them. But part of the story is Nick realizing that he isn’t straight since he’s also falling for Charlie. It’s adorable and sweet and everything you need in a YA graphic novel.
5. Rufus from They Both Die at the End by Adam Silvera
Even though at its core, this book will probably make you ugly cry, the characters in it are great. Rufus really opens up to Mateo as they spend their last day together, and inevitably fall in love. This is an Adam Silvera novel after all. He has a knack for really hitting you in all the feels.
Honorable mention: Alex from Red, White, & Royal Blue by Casey McQuiston
I was sticking to YA for this list, but I can’t make a bisexual list without mentioned Alex from one of my favorite books. Alex comes to the realization that he’s bisexual throughout the story. Then he falls in love with Henry and it’s absolutely adorable.
