Do you ever just have those weeks that get away from you? That’s how I’ve felt about this week. Which means for the week of 10/17, not a whole lot of reading got done. I have a bunch of stuff coming due for school the first week of November, which is just a week away. This next week calls for some time management! Then it’s one more month and I’m done with my degree! Hooray! I’m honestly so ready to be done.
Anyway, I still have quite a few books on my October TBR I’m also hoping to finish next week. I can do it! That’s just what I’m going to keep telling myself until it happens.
Bite Size Reviews: Week of 10/17
Ms. Marvel, Vol. 2: Generation Why by G. Willow Wilson (10/18)
In this second volume, Kamala is still trying to figure out the superhero thing. The Inventor is preying on teenagers in the New Jersey area, but maybe Wolverine can help! I love Ms. Marvel and I keep loving it with each volume I read. I’ve read a few before, but I’m getting caught up again. Kamala is fun and I love teenage superheroes. It’s part of the reason I love Spider-Man, too! (5 stars)
Ms. Marvel, Vol. 3: Crushed by G. Willow Wilson (10/18)
This volume is themed around Valentine’s Day, and Kamala has a new crush! He almost seems too good to be true, honestly. Especially when it gets her into trouble. Plus, we get an appearance from Loki, which is always fun. This volume is shorter than some of the other ones, but it’s such a fun, light-hearted story. Seeing Kamala crushing on someone is a fun side of her that we haven’t seen much of it yet. Can’t wait to continue the series (4 stars).
Ms. Marvel, Vol. 4: Last Days by G. Willow Wilson (10/18)
As the world is about to end, Kamala finds herself teaming up with Captain Marvel to help save Jersey City. She’s desperate to save the ones she loves, but what if the world really ends? There’s a bonus Spider-Man story at the end of this, which I loved seeing them team up! Ms. Marvel teams up with a lot of great people, plus she’s friends with Miles Morales in later issues. I binged all of these volumes in one day and I don’t even feel bad about it (5 stars).
Good Omens by Neil Gaiman and Terry Pratchett (10/20)
This was an audiobook listen! Also about the end of the world. Aziraphale (an angel) and Crowley (a demon) aren’t really looking forward to the coming Apocalypse. So, they decide to do something about it. There are laugh out loud moments in this book, despite the dark subject matter. I’d highly recommend the audiobook because it’s an even more immersive experience. The narrator does an excellent job bringing these characters to life (4 stars).
Sorcery of Thorns by Margaret Rogerson (10/20)
Growing up in the Great Library, Elisabeth knows that sorcerer’s are evil. She wants to become a warden, protecting the world from the powers of the grimoires (magical books). But when the library is sabotaged, she becomes a suspect. It’s only through the help of sorcerer Nathanial Thorn that she’ll be able to get to the bottom of what’s happening to the libraries. I’ve had this ARC since this book came out, and I can’t believe it took me so long to read it. Magical libraries. What isn’t to like? Rogerson pulls at your emotions with great characters and unique magic that pulls you in right from the beginning (4 stars).
Memento by Amie Kaufman and Jay Kristoff (10/21)
The pre-order novella from the Illuminae Files is now available as an audiobook! So of course I had to listen to it. This is a prequel of sorts, leading up to the events that happen in the first book. This full cast audiobook brings us back to our favorite AI system, AIDAN, and we get to see what leads to the errors that bring about later events. However, this isn’t something you have to read before the Illuminae Files. In fact, I would read it after! Then the character appearances are even more fun (5 stars).
Book EndingsĀ by Syntell Smith (10/22)
I posted a full review of this already, but a brief little note here! I love library stories, and there are some great characters in this one. Smith also leaves you with a lot to think about once the book is over, which is one of the best kinds of books! Definitely an author to keep an eye on (4 stars).
The Dark Tide by Alicia Jasinska (10/23)
Each year, a witch lures a boy back to her palace to be a sacrifice to stop the dark tide from drowning the city. Lina is desperate to save her brother–but the boy she loves is taken instead. So she goes to save him. What she doesn’t expect to make a connection with the witch. The premise of this book is fantastic, but there was just something missing from it. It almost feels like it might have suffered from too much editing. More description and more breath from the characters would have really pushed it over the edge (3 stars).
