How are we halfway through April already? This month is going by so quickly. Maybe it’s because we’re getting busier at work, which I have mixed feelings about. The COVID cases are going up really quickly in Michigan, so we’ll see how that fairs the next few months. But I’m fully vaccinated, which I’m thankful for. Hopefully more vaccines will help with the numbers eventually! Anyway, it’s time for my weekly wrap up! For the Week of 4/10, I read 6 books!
For May and June, I have a ton of books to review on NetGalley, so stay tuned for those! I’m trying to keep up on them to keep my ratio at the right percentage. So far, it’s going pretty well. Now, I just can’t request more books until I read some of the ones I have.
Bite Size Reviews: Week of 4/10
Shadow and Bone by Leigh Bardugo (4/10)
With the upcoming Netflix show, I decided to finally get to this trilogy! Alina has never really been good at anything. But when her regiment is attacked on the Fold, she finds she has the power as a sun summoner. Which puts a target on her back. The Darkling recruits her to help him eliminate the Fold–but what are his true intentions? I’ve read Six of Crows, so I’m familiar with this world. Getting some of the background is really helpful, though. The magic system and world is more enticing than the characters, at least for me. Interested in seeing how they adapt it, though! (3 stars)
Katie the Catsitter by Colleen A.F. Venable (4/11)
Katie is dreading being alone for the summer while her best friends are at camp. So, she gets a summer job catsitting for her neighbor. What seems like an easy job on the surface quickly becomes complicated when Katie realizes her neighbor has 217 cats! And just might be involved with the city’s greatest supervillain. This was such a fun middle grade read. I love this world that Venable created and all the cats! IT was just adorable all around (4 stars).
Kate in Waiting by Becky Albertalli (4/13)
I already wrote a review for this, but happy to gush about it here, too! It’s Becky Albertalli, so I knew I was likely going to love this book. Albertalli always nails character right on the head, and this book is no different. I loved the little found family that Kate has, and her passion for theater. Even though it’s easy to see where the story is going, the characters make it all worth it (4.5 stars).
She Drives Me Crazy by Kelly Quindlen (4/14)
Another one that I already wrote a review for that comes out next week! I also loved this book, a lesbian enemies to lovers that I think a lot of readers will fall in love with. The characters, again, are fantastic in this, easily drawing you into the story. I loved the banter between Scottie and Irene and their friends were so amazingly supportive. All around a great rom-com for spring! (4 stars).
Two Dark Reigns by Kendare Blake (4/14)
Now that Katharine has the crown, she’s ready to rule Fennbirn. However, her sisters are still alive, just hiding on the mainland. Jules, meanwhile, is in hiding. As she makes new alliances, they try to convince her to rebel against Katharine. Maybe the time of the queens are over. This is formatted pretty much like the other books in this series. With a little more action! There’s so much going on this that I felt more invested than the other books. Overall, I love this world that Blake has created. It’s so fascinating and dark! And the audiobooks are great (3 stars).
Siege and Storm by Leigh Bardugo (4/16)
Picking up where Shadow and Bone left off, Alina and Mal are on the run. However, they know they’ll have to go and face the Darkling at some point. Alina is determined to fight against the Darkling, but doing so might mean using the same magic that the Darkling does. This book, for me, suffered from second book syndrome. It felt a little laggy, until the end of it. There was a lot of build up, which I think will eventually pay off in the third book. We’ll see! (3 stars).
