Hello friends! We’re officially done with the first week of May, and what a whirlwind week it was! My sister graduated from college today, and tomorrow is Mother’s Day. I have a feeling that May will go by just as quickly as April did. For the Week of 5/1, I read a total of 11 books! Which is impressive, but also most of them were graphic novels. Or manga. So those, I’ll probably include in single reviews for the volumes I’ve read. And more will be coming in the next few weeks!
Bite Size Reviews: Week of 5/1
The Avant-Guards Volumes 1, 2, & 3 by Carly Usdin (5/2)
Someone recommended this because it feels similar to Fence, and I’d agree! Charlie transfers to a new arts school and is unsure about where she’s going to fit. When she’s recruited to join the basketball team, she finds more than a team. She finds a family. I marathoned all three of these volumes last Sunday and loved each one. Great characters, great art. What else could you ask for? (5 stars)
Wynd Book One: Flight of the Prince by James Tynion IV (5/2)
I already wrote a review for this, so just a few thoughts here! This volume is an introduction to a new fantasy graphic novel series that feels a lot like Dungeons & Dragons. So if you like that, you’ll definitely love this book! Plus, the art in it is stunning. The art helped to make this story even more immersive and I loved it (4 stars).
Fangs by Sarah Andersen (5/3)
Another graphic novel! I told you that was a trend for this week. This one is a short but sweet story about a vampire and a werewolf who are dating. It’s just a series of short comics, but I fell in love with the first one. They are adorable and funny, and I almost want to buy my own copy. It’s something I would definitely read as a pick me up! (5 stars).
May the Best Man Win by ZR Ellor (5/5)
A full review for this book will be coming sometime this week! This is a story about Jeremy, a trans boy, and Lukas, an autistic teen, who are competing for homecoming king. Oh, and they’re also exes. While this is a rom-com on the outside, it’s definitely much heavier than that. Like, I had to put it down halfway through because it deals with some heavy stuff. This isn’t a bad thing, but more to come in my full review this week! (4.5 stars).
Our Dreams at Dusk Volumes 1, 2, & 3 by Yuhki Kamatani (5/5)
Tasuku is the new kid in town, but he’s also terrified of being outed as gay. When he meets a mysterious woman, she leads him to a little community where he can feel accepted. This was recommended by an author I love and oh my goodness. So many emotions. Seriously, each one of these volumes just gets better. And the art is fantastic (5 stars).
Becoming by Michelle Obama (5/7)
This is Michelle Obama’s memoir about her life and living in the White House, which I read for book club! I love the Obamas and wish they didn’t have to leave the White House, honestly. I also really liked getting to see how hard they worked to make the White House and the government more accessible. Unfortunately, I don’t think the administration that follows them did the same (5 stars).
Crooked Kingdom by Leigh Bardugo (5/7)
Following the events in Six of Crows, Kaz and his crew are trying to figure out how to turn around what happened. I won’t say much else to avoid spoilers for the first book. But, Bardugo’s writing is on point in this series, and the characters are just so great. There are a lot of points of view, but I don’t mind because each of them are so unique. I wish the whole series was about them (5 stars).
