Happy Saturday everyone! It’s a bit of a late post today, but better late than never! I’m getting back into my reading groove, which is great because there are a lot of great books coming out this spring! Plus, I have a lot of books on NetGalley to review. So be prepared for a lot of reviews to come in the following months. Anyway, for the Week of 2/26 I read a total of 6 books. Not bad for the first week of March!
Bite Size Reviews: Week of 2/26
African Town by Irene Latham (2/26)
This book chronicles the story of the last group of Africans that were enslaved and brought to the United States in the late 1800s. Following 14 different voices, we get their journey and what happens after the Civil War is over. I would actually recommend listening to this on audio, since they use different narrators for the different voices. You can tell both authors did their research, and it’s an important story that needs to be told (4 stars).
Blood Scion by Deborah Falaye (2/27)
I already wrote a review for this book, so just a few thoughts here! The action and the pacing were well done for the most part, and I enjoyed the military aspect of the book. There are some great characters as well, making it a fantasy that you’ll want to keep your eyes out for! (4 stars).
The Greatest Thing by Sarah Winifred Searle (2/27)
Winifred’s two best friends have left her for her sophomore year. Now navigating high school on her own, she doesn’t expect to make any new friends. Enter Oscar and April: two fellow outcasts. This graphic novel hits all of the right notes thoughout the story. From the art to the characters to the emotions, there’s so much to love about it. It honestly might be one that I have to add to my own personal collection at some point! (5 stars).
Wingbearer by Marjorie Liu (2/28)
Another review from the week! This fantasy middle grade graphic novel also hit a lot of the right notes. The art was one of my absolute favorite parts, as it definitely brought this world to life. My only qualm was that it was a bit wordy at times. But I’m definitely interested in reading the next volume! (4 stars).
The Magical Boy Vol. 1 by The Kao (3/1)
All Max wants is to live life as a boy. But his family history proves that this will be difficult. Descended from a long line of Magical Girls, it’s up to him to save the world from the darkness. This was such a fun graphic novel! From start to finished, I was fully invested in Max’s story. Plus, the art really helped in bringing his story to life. Can’t wait for the second volume! (4.5 stars).
The Book of Living Secrets by Madeleine Roux (3/4)
The final review from this week! If you’re looking for a gother horror novel, you’ll definitely want to check this one out next week. It has great atmospheric horror and it’s such an engaging story (4 stars).
