Summary
Chi-Chi’s one problem is that she constantly has crushes on rich white boys who don’t know she exists. When her promposal to Flip Henderson (the most popular guy in school) gets played in English class, she gets rejected publicly.
After the rejection, Chi-Chi and Flip find that they’re now intertwined–literally. One morning, Chi-Chi wakes up in Flip’s body. And Flip in Chi-Chi’s body. And now they have to figure out how to get back.
Review: Flip
Thanks to NetGalley and First Second for an advanced copy of Flip by Ngozi Ukazu to review! Ukazu is probably one of my favorite comics creators, so I was excited to see that she had a new graphic novel coming out. And this one was just as great as the others! Especially when it came to Chi-Chi and Flip’s relationship.
If you like the idea of Freaky Friday, this will be a great read for you. At the beginning, Flip and Chi-Chi think they have the other pinned down. But when they spend time in each other’s bodies, they realize they had only scratched the surface. Intertwined in their personal stories is a story about privilege and realizing people aren’t always what they seem on the surface.
The art, as always, was great and suited the story really well. What you might think is just a fun body swapping story actually dives into some really tough topics, like race, privilege, mental health, and friendship. Come for the fun storyline and stay for the deep messages.
Ukazu once again hits it out of the park with this book!
