Summary

Kole has mastered the art of deflection. He doesn’t want people to know why he had to move to St. Thomas with his dad, and explains away the bruises that often appear on his body. But he can’t hide the way he is drawn to Gabriel.

Gabriel is always trying to fade into the background. A constant target for bullying around the island with a mother struggling to make ends meet, he doesn’t have hope that life will change after high school. As his connection with Kole becomes a lifeline, can their love survive in a world that doesn’t think they should be together?

Review: Sun Chasers

Thanks to NetGalley and Amulet Books for an advanced copy of Sun Chasers to review! Kacen Callender isn’t afraid to tackle difficult issues, and that definitely shows in this book. It isn’t an easy read by any means. It tackles issues like suicidal thoughts, depression, abuse, and transphobia. Though the topics are difficult, Callender handles them with grace.

Despite my dislike of the use of second person in books, I think it’s used in an important way here. Both Kole and Gabriel talk directly to each other in each of their sections. And it works in showing the strength of their bond. They are both teens coming from incredibly difficult situations. So, they are both able to find a home in each other.

Callender’s words are incredibly lyrical in this story. Not only does it have a beautiful setting, the emotions are portrayed so well. You can feel what Kole and Gabriel are feeling. You want them to find the happiness that they deserve.

At its core, this is a book about learning to stand up to abusers and finding the strength and voice to do so. It’s one of those books that isn’t easy to read, but the story is sure to stay with you after you finish reading it.
