Welcome to the end of another week! Which means that it’s time for a Bite Size Review post! I got a decent amount of reading done this week, and the number is going to go up next week. Planning on re-reading all of the Saga volumes in time for the new issue coming out this week and I can’t wait. But anyway! For the Week of 1/15, I read a total of 7 books!
Bite Size Reviews: Week of 1/15
This Woven Kingdom by Tahereh Mafi (1/16)
Alizeh is hiding in plain sight as a servant, the heir to the lost Jinn Kingdom. Meanwhile, Kamran doesn’t suspect that the girl he ran into would end his world as he knows it. Inspired by Persian mythology, this is Mafi’s newest fantasy series. While I loved the concept, the book itself felt a little on the long side and the voice couldn’t really find itself by the middle of the book. Stay tuned for a full review to come this week! (3.5 stars).
Spy x Famliy, Vol. 2 by Tatsuya Endo (1/16)
The second volume in the Spy x Family series, and it’s just as much fun as the first! Anya has started going to school, with Twilight trying to get her in with Donovan Desmond. There are just so many great moments in this book. I love these characters and I’m excited to keep reading about them! (4.5 stars).
Spider-Man: Back in Black by J. Michael Straczynski (1/17)
Taking place immediately after the events in Civil War, Peter has donned his black suit in order to find the person who shot Aunt May. Desperate to make sure his aunt doesn’t die, Peter will do whatever it takes. This is a prequel to one of the most controversial storylines in the Spider-Man comics, and also the storyline No Way Home is based on. The dark Peter issues were great, the other issues weren’t quite up to par (3 stars).
Spider-Man: One More Day by J. Michael Stracyznski (1/18)
In oter to save Aunt May, Peter makes a deal with Mephisto: His marriage with MJ for his Aunt’s life. Oh, and everyone is going to forget that he is Spider-Man. The loose inspiration for the latest movie, though the movie makes it even more devastating. I can see why this storyline is so controversial, but I don’t think it’s quite as bad as everyone said. But maybe it was the reset the character needed (3 stars).
Skin of the Sea by Natasha Bowen (1/18)
Simi serves the gods as a mermaid, collecting souls that die at sea and helping them pass on. But when she saves one instead, it takes her on a path that she never expected. The world building and the mythology in this book is fantastic I just wish the characters would have lived up to this magnificent world that Bowen created. There was just a little more oomph needed there (3 stars).
Marshmallow & Jordan by Alina Chau (1/19)
After an accident, Jordan is in a wheelchair and can no longer play for her school’s basketball team. She thinks her competition days are behind her, until she meets an elephant named Jordan who shows her otherwise. This is a graphic novel that is absolutely adorable. It has great representation and the art is beautiful as well (4 stars).
All My Rage by Sabaa Tahir (1/20)
Salahudin and Noor grew up together, as outcasts in Juniper California. At least, until a fight has pulled them apart. After Salahudin’s mother dies, Salahudin takes drastic measures to save the motel that was her dream. What he didn’t mean was for Noor to get involved as well. This is Tahir’s first foray into contemporary fiction, and it is a doozy. I’ll be writing a review for this one this week too, so stay tuned! (5 stars).
