Summary

Rosefinch has the ability to break curses with her hands due to her upbringing with the fey. But the longer her magic exists outside the fey realm, the more dangerous it gets. So, Rosefinch follows a rumor to a cursed town with a witch that might help her control her magic.

However, when she attempts to lift the curse, she instead finds Thierry, a cursed human who cannot leave the castle. Together, the two try to unravel what happened in this castle and to help Thierry figure out their past.

Thanks to Feiwel & Friends and NetGalley for an advanced copy of Hollow Magic by Mars Lauderbaugh to review! This is Lauderbaugh’s debut graphic novel, and it’s excellent for a debut! I know their art from the Cemetery Boys cover art, so I was excited to get to see more of their art in this one.

The art is probably the most impressive thing about this book. From the character design and the landscapes, Lauderbaugh really immerses the reader in this world. The color palette used also suits the story well, and I enjoyed the pops of magic throughout.

There’s a found family aspect to this story, which I always enjoy. None of the characters have fantastic family histories, and this is unraveled as they work through the mystery of the curse. My only disappointment is that this story wasn’t longer. At times, the pace seems really fast, skimming over details and world building that would have made this story spectacular.

All in all, if you enjoy magical graphic novels with found family themes, definitely check this book out when it comes out in August!
